Travel Info

When to go

Usually, the summer (Dec-Feb) but another great and less crowded time to visit is in the fall (Mar-Apr).

Cost

I travelled for about 67$/day (2019). See my complete travel cost. For today's prediction visit this website.

How long do I need

It always depends on your travel speed, but about 2 weeks if you are not planning to do too many multi-day hikes.

Highlights

  • The Capes: The Jaw-dropping Cape Hauy and Cape Raoul
  • Lavender Farm: The only reason not to visit is if you hate purple or don't like the smell
  • Maria Island: A car-free island with lots to see (don't miss the painted cliffs)
  • Hiking: Lots of cool hikes like Frenchmans Cap
  • National Parks: Freycinet and Cradle Mountain are a must

Pictures

Tessellated Pavement, Tasmania: Those cuts in the rock might look human-made, but they are the work of the sea. The ocean has a curious sense of geometry.
Cape Hauy, Tasmania: Zoom into the picture, look for a tiny red spot on the left side. Yes, this is actually a person... Can you process how immensely big this is? Me neither...
Cape Hauy, Tasmania: Jaw-dropping!
Cape Raoul, Tasmania: Some of the coastline on the way to Cape Raoul.
Why make life so complicated when it is as simple as being mesmerized by everything around us?
Mount Field National Park, Tasmania: Tasmania is known for its nasty weather (literally horizontal rain). In this picture, you can see the wind in action. This hike was so windy I wouldn’t have heard someone talking to me, even if they would have been a few metres away... WHAT DID YOU SAY???
Mount Field National Park, Tasmania: A nice view point
Wildlife: A Wombat
Frenchmans Cap, Tasmania: On the way up that good looking rocky peak.
Frenchmans Cap, Tasmania: The view from the summit.
Frenchmans Cap, Tasmania: Another photo since the view is so picturesque.
Salamanca Market, Tasmania: An impressively big market with over 300 stalls. My favourite? The ones with free samples!
Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania: Cradle Mountain in the back, definitely a fun scramble.
Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania: On the way up
Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania: The view from the summit.
Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania: Another nice view
Bridestowe Lavender Farm, Tasmania: Just imagine the smell surrounding you.
Sometimes it’s the smallest thing that keeps everything balanced.
Wall of Jerusalem National Park, Tasmania: The view from Mount Jerusalem
Bay of Fire, Tasmania: Despite the orange rock, the name “Bay of Fire” originated from the first explorer seeing fire on its shore (from aboriginal settlements).
Freycinet National Park, Tasmania: A beautiful beach they call: “Wineglass Beach”.
Freycinet National Park, Tasmania: The view over 2 bays from Mount Freycinet.
Maria Island, Tasmania: Maria Island is a car-free national park, once you take the ferry to the island, walking and biking are the only ways to get around.
Maria Island, Tasmania: This is part of what they call the fossil cliffs, rocks having shells dating hundreds of millions of years.
Maria Island, Tasmania: The painted cliffs, definitely a masterpiece...
Maria Island, Tasmania: A close up of the painted cliffs. Mother Nature is quite a wonderful artist.
